Nuacht na Scoile

Deireadh Fómhair/October 2017

We are a few weeks into our new school year and we hope you are all settled in. We have a big task ahead of us this year to fundraise for our new school. We need to raise a substantial amount of money in as short a time as possible. We urgently need our new school as our prefabs are well past their best and are proving to be a constant drain on our resources in terms of maintenance and heating. If we are in a position to purchase our new site and move on to the planning and design phase, we could be in our new school by 2020. Please support any of the upcoming fundraising events. The Parents Association are working hard, as always, putting fundraising plans in place. Please attend their upcoming AGM Wed 25th Oct @ 8.30pm.

Liam McCarthy Cup! We are delighted to welcome the Cup to the school on Tuesday 3rd Oct. To celebrate this honour all kids can wear their Galway Jerseys !!

Skip—Hop!! As part of our PE programme Mrs Donovan has arranged for Skip-Hop to visit the school on Mon 2nd & Tues 3rd Oct! Skip-Hop delivers tailored skipping workshops which will leave children, teachers and parents highly motivated, raving about the children's end of day demonstration and amazed at the new skills learned. Workshops include individual skipping skills, partner skipping skills, double Dutch skipping and long rope games all of which are suitable for and tailored for reception ages through to young adults. There is a small cost of €2 per child.

Scoil Mhuire Science Fair To coincide with this year’s Galway Science & Technology Festival, Scoil Mhuire will be running its own Science Week from the 12th – 19th of November. We are looking for parents who have an interest in, or are working in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths, who are willing to come in to the school and demonstrate an activity to either a class group during that week or to demonstrate an activity. If you would be willing to help out please get in touch with us on or before Wednesday 18th October. Thanks to all those who helped to make last year’s event such a success.

Fundraising CD! We are launching a CD as a fundraiser for the New School Fund. The CD will have songs from each class We would welcome any parents who play instruments to volunteer to be backing musicians. If you are willing to help please let us know ASAP. Wednesday October the 25th will be our recording day in Teach na Gaeilge and music teacher Tommy Keane has kindly volunteered his time and equipment to make this possible.

Scoil Mhuire Parents Association (PA) is having its AGM in The Forge on October 25th at 8:30pm. The PA’s role is to represent your voice as a parent of a Scoil Mhuire student. All parents are welcome to attend the AGM, with no obligation towards input or further participation if that is your wish. The Principal Mr Terry Kavanagh will also be addressing the AGM. This is a great forum for understanding both the role of the PA, and learning of the school activities directly from the principal. Parents are also invited to attend any PA meetings. We meet for 90 minutes every 4-6 weeks, to discuss school projects and fund-raising initiatives. If you are interested in meeting like-minded parents, with a view to improving the school experience of our children, we would love to hear from you. Attendance to meetings is not mandatory, and there is an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere.

If you are interested, please mail us: moyscoilmhuirepa@gmail.com

School Photos Shayna Devaney will be here on Mon 9th of October to take class photos and individual photos and on Fri 13th to take family and group photos. Please return photograph forms to the office by 3rd Oct.

School Uniforms/Coats and Jackets.

Please ensure that children are wearing the correct school uniform each day. Scoil Mhuire’s uniform is

inexpensive, practical, comfortable and smart. Both versions, the informal consisting of navy track top (crest optional), white polo shirt and navy track pants, along with runners or plimsols, and the formal consisting of navy jumper/cardigan (crest optional), white shirt/blouse and grey trousers/skirt/pinafore along with black shoes, are available in Dunnes Stores, Debenhams and Marks and Spencer and the National Schoolwear Centre (Liosbaun Industrial Estate (crested versions).

Not part of the uniform are items such as :

  • Navy track pants with logos such as Canterbury, Addidas, Nike etc.
  • Tight fitting navy or grey leggings
  • Football and soccer jerseys

It would be a great help in returning lost, mislaid and forgotten items to their owners if you could ensure that your child’s name is clearly marked on the label of each item of clothing. A staggering amount of clothing was left behind in the school last June and not reclaimed during the entire month of September.

Thank You.

Thank you for your support of our school. Thank you for your generosity, your patience and your co-operation.

Thank you for the little things you do and say that make our school such a pleasant place (prefabs notwithstanding) to work and learn.

Míle buíochas, a Cháirde.
